My freelancing journey and how freelancer marketplace has helped me achieve success.
How Started
I embarked on my freelancing journey after leaving my full-time position at a web development agency, UY Systems Ltd. With a deep passion for UI/UX design, I yearned to explore my creative potential beyond the confines of a regular job. Eventually, the day arrived when I made the decision to pursue freelancing as a full-time career.
To my surprise, acquiring my first project on the freelancing platform was not as challenging as I had anticipated. I joined the marketplace in the mid-2006 and started attracting clients’ attention by the end of that year. Since then, I have never looked back. The period from 2010 to 2015 was particularly remarkable, as I secured numerous long-term projects that compelled me to assemble a skilled and compact team, leading to the establishment of a successful web development agency, PHASE 3 SOLUTION and Skill development training centre, NUR INFOSYS in Dhaka, Bangladesh.
Achievement
I am proud to have received the “BASIS Outsourcing Award” in the Web Design category in 2014 as an individual freelancer. This accolade recognized the significant contributions I made to the outsourcing industry in software and IT-enabled services from Bangladesh. Additionally, I was honored with the “Freelancer Meet Award” in the same year.
Mistake
Subsequently, I began to attract local clients and found myself devoting less time to the online marketplace. Looking back, I believe this was a mistake.
I should not have slowed down my online activities. Although projects continued to come through the freelancer platform, I did not actively bid on projects for a period of 4-5 years.
Since June 2023, I have made a firm commitment to refocus on the online marketplace, avoiding any further interruptions. Locally, I found that I was spending an excessive amount of unproductive time. For instance, a project that could be completed in 1-2 weeks would often take 4-6 weeks due to numerous physical meetings and the challenges of collecting feedback in person. I recall suggesting several companies within the group to upgrade their IT departments or adopt more efficient working methods. Collecting client specifications and feedback online proved to be much simpler. However, residing in the same area made implementing these changes difficult.
Conclusion
I want to emphasize that I am not discouraging anyone from working with local clients, but rather sharing my personal experience working with a group of companies. Ultimately, loyalty and smart work are key. It’s important to take action today, not tomorrow.
